Unexpected Good News or Conscious Labor?

In this spiritual journey, we examine the fine line between Conscious Labor vs Unexpected News to understand the true source of joy.

We see it everywhere on social media feeds—a prayer shared by thousands: “O Lord, grant me unexpected good news that will restore my joy for life.”

At first glance, it sounds innocent, doesn’t it? A lost joy within, and we call out to the Creator to repair it with a surprise “good news” from the outside. This wish, often attributed to great names but of unknown origin, perfectly summarizes the profound spiritual impasse of the modern human. Let’s look at this prayer from another perspective.

From the lens of spiritual teachings, this prayer leads us to a razor’s edge: Is this truly “Creative Visualization,” or a trap of “Mechanical Waiting” that lulls the soul into a deep sleep? Let us examine this prayer in the light of ancient wisdom, from Neo-Spiritualism to the Fourth Way.

Is It Possible to Ask for What You Haven’t Earned?

Hidden beneath this prayer is an expectation that a blessing will rain down from the outside without any effort. However, Dr. Bedri Ruhselman, the founder of Neo-Spiritualism, states universal laws clearly in Destiny and Requirements: “No value is given for free.”

Isn’t evolution (tekâmül) essentially a merit earned through effort? Dr. Ruhselman explains that Divine Grace is not like the gifts distributed by ancient sultans at their whim; rather, it is the result of consciously obeying the laws of divine will with effort. Seeking a massive energy like “joy for life” just by “wishing” does not align with the unshakeable law of cause and effect. If we truly want something, we must pay the price with cehit and gayret—conscious labor and effort.

Mechanical Prayers and the Famous State of “Sleep”

The teachings of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky remind us: the greatest tragedy of man is that he thinks he is awake while he is actually in a deep sleep. This prayer often becomes a typical reflection of the “mechanical man.” Instead of taking responsibility to establish internal balance, the individual waits for a magical change through external news.

P. D. Ouspensky, in The Psychology of Man’s Possible Evolution, says something striking: even prayers like “Lord, have mercy on me” yield no result if repeated like a parrot, without knowing which “I” is speaking. Any plea made only for external conditions to change, unaccompanied by consciousness and genuine feeling, unfortunately, traps us in a passive “sleep of expectation.” (Also read: Evolution Journey)

Imagination: Creation or Escape?

There is a very fine line here. Shakti Gawain explains in Creative Visualization that desired states can be drawn into life by visualizing them. Thought is a dynamic energy, so in this sense, prayer can be seen as an affirmation.

But Neo-Spiritualist teaching warns us sternly against “uncontrolled fantasies.” In Spirit and the Universe, Dr. Bedri Ruhselman draws the line: “Imagination begins with the will and ends with the will.” If you are raising your own frequency through your will while praying, it is a creation. But if you are lost in dreams of “a savior coming to rescue me,” it is nothing but a state of confusion (teşevvüş) that clouds the soul.

The Fallacy Behind the “Unexpected”

The emphasis on “unexpected” in the prayer suggests that there are coincidences in the universe. However, Silver Birch, in the Wisdom from the Spirit World series, corrects this misconception: “There is no accident, no coincidence, no luck, no miracle. The Divine Architect has planned everything.”

The loss of our joy or the difficulties we face are not cosmic errors, but lessons specifically designed for the soul’s evolutionary needs. As Silver Birch said, we cannot find the taste of happiness without recognizing destiny. Asking to be rid of a state through “good news” without learning the lesson is like a child expecting a diploma without doing their homework. Peace does not arrive by external cargo; it is born from within.

Conclusion: True Prayer is Not “Asking,” It Is “Being”

This prayer, however innocent it may seem, creates a comfort zone that drags the soul into inertia if it pushes us into passive waiting. Truth is not an “unexpected package” left at the door; it is a fortress we build brick by brick, from the inside out, every single day. Perhaps it is closer to spiritual laws to change the prayer as follows:

“O Lord, give me the consciousness to see my inner obstacles that veil my joy for life, the insight to solve the wisdom behind this hardship, and the strength of will to build my own reality.”

Because the real miracle is not in the news from the outside; the real miracle is the will to ignite one’s own light through conscious labor. To understand how this light ripens within the soul over time, you may also explore our reflection on Patience and the Dance of Evolution.
