In the modern era, PATIENCE is often a misunderstood concept. In a time where speed, instant gratification, and result-orientation are glorified, patience is perceived as inertia, lagging behind, passivity, or submission. It is seen as being imprisoned by another’s thought, or waiting for something to happen without showing any effort. However, Patience and the Law of Gradualness play a vital role in this sacred process. The essence of Sabır ve Tedriç is fundamentally intertwined with this.
Is Patience Truly Waiting or Ripening?
Embracing Patience and the Law of Gradualness can transform our approach to personal challenges and aspirations.
Understanding Patience and Gradualness is crucial for our personal growth and development.
It is neither a defeat against time nor a surrender to circumstances. PATIENCE IS THE RIPENING OF THE RELATIONSHIP THAT CONSCIOUSNESS ESTABLISHES WITH TIME.
- Academic Perspective: Patience is the capacity to regulate emotional responses and think long-term in the face of uncertainty, delay, or difficulty.
- Psychological Perspective: It is explained through self-regulation and delayed gratification. A patient individual chooses meaningful, sustainable results over instant satisfaction.
- Philosophical Perspective: It is the conscious relationship one establishes with processes beyond their control. Human consciousness faces two realms:
- The Controllable: Intention, choice, attitude, and meaning-making.
- The Uncontrollable: The flow of time, the will of others, and how/when results manifest.
Internal conflict begins when one tries to manage the second realm like the first. This is where patience intervenes.
PATIENCE IS NOT GIVING UP CONTROL OVER THE UNCONTROLLABLE; IT IS ESTABLISHING A CONSCIOUS BOND WITH IT. It means:
- Not denying what is.
- Not antagonizing the process.
- Not seeing time as a personal obstacle.
- Observing uncertainty with attention instead of panic.
In other words, patience does not say “I cannot manage this”; it says: “Knowing I cannot manage this, I choose how I will stand.” (Also read: Journey Of Evolution)
The Dance of Time with Patience: The Law of Gradualness (Tedric)
Why doesn’t everything happen all at once? Why does a seed need months or years to bear fruit? If we listen to the silent whisper of ancient wisdom, a majestic law emerges: THE LAW OF GRADUALNESS.
WHAT IS GRADUALNESS? (The Sacred Rhythm of Slowness) Meaning to rise step by step, this law is the most important educational tool used by the Soul in its journey of evolution. It aligns perfectly with the “stations” (maqams) in Sufism. From a seed becoming a plane tree to a human evolving from rawness to maturity… nothing happens instantly or by leaping. Each step progresses by honoring the previous one.
The Role of Time: Time is the field of application for the Law of Gradualness; it is the playground offered to the Soul. If you were given a choice to reach a goal by flying, running, or walking, which would you choose? While flying gets you there quickly, you would miss the wisdom and experience prepared for you along the path. (Also read: Merit And Growth)
The Secret of the Bamboo Tree: A Story of Trust (Tevekkul)
Every atom in the universe is a sign (Ayah) of the Creator. The Bamboo tree, with its elegant and steadfast posture reaching from the depths of the earth to the sky, teaches us patience, trust (Tevekkül), and the esoteric science of time.
The First Act: The Hermitage of Patience (Sükût and Deepening) When bamboo meets the soil, it nurtures itself in the womb of the earth for five years in silence and surrender. This is not an absence of growth; on the contrary, it is the most profound period of work. Just as a dervish nurtures his soul in a retreat by abandoning worldly desires, the bamboo strengthens itself internally, away from the haste of the outside world.
The Second Act: The Surrender of Trust (Leaving it to the Divine Flow) At the end of five years, the bamboo has firmly anchored its roots. Now, it is time to leave itself to the flow of Divine Power. Suddenly, it begins to sprout with unexpected speed—30 meters in just six weeks. This is the bamboo’s state of Tevekkül.
The bamboo grower has done everything required: watered, fertilized, and waited. He knows that the rest is beyond his power. In the spiritual journey, after a deep internal preparation, doors open when the time is right. This is possible by surrendering to the Divine Will with total trust.
Let us conclude with one final sentence: WAIT, TAKE ROOT, BE PATIENT, AND SURRENDER WITH YOUR WHOLE BEING. THAT WHICH IS MOST AUSPICIOUS WILL MANIFEST AT THE MOST ACCURATE TIME.
