Is the person you see in the mirror each morning the same as the one you converse with when your head hits the pillow at night?
Most of us try to navigate life using a map that doesn’t belong to us. We were told, “This is who you are.” They gave us a name, handed us an ID card, selected a profession, and said, “There, this is you.” And we believed it. For years, we polished that label, decorated that mask.
But sometimes, that inexplicable feeling of emptiness settles right in the center of our chest. The question “What am I?” is too vast to be answered by a mere title or name.
Self-Discovery: What Am I? Beyond the Physical Form
Are you merely a pile of flesh and bone? Or are you an indescribable energy using this body like a “garment”? Ancient teachings whisper that “He who knows himself, knows his Lord,” suggesting that the great power we seek externally is actually hidden within that silent room inside us.
You are not the events you experience. You are not even the emotions you feel. Emotions are like clouds passing through the sky; they change constantly. If you were your sadness, you would vanish when the sadness fades. But you remain. You are the “Observer” who watches those clouds, the silent witness behind the eyes. Recognizing this distinction is the first step of the longest journey.
Why Am I Here? The Purpose of Experience
The modern world constantly imposes a “target” upon us. “Your goal is to be successful, wealthy, to leave a mark…” Yet, perhaps the answer to why we are here is much simpler: To experience. (Also read: Mirror Of Truth)
A tree’s goal isn’t to become the tallest in the forest; a tree’s goal is simply to live its “tree-ness.” Perhaps your life purpose isn’t to save the world; maybe it is simply to fully “comprehend” the pleasure of sipping a cup of coffee, the purity in a child’s laughter, or the sharp pain of a broken heart. Evolution is not about climbing a summit; it is about peeling off your layers to descend into your essence.
The Longest Journey is an Internal Archaeology
Knowing yourself does not mean adding new information on top of what you have. On the contrary, it means subtracting everything stuck to you that isn’t yours.
Imagine an archaeologist brushing away dust and dirt to reveal a hidden statue. That statue is your essence. The dirt is your fears, the prejudices taught to you by family and society, and the “you must” rules of the world. The longest journey requires you to remove these layers one by one. When you clear away everything that is not “you,” what remains is the truth.
This process is uncomfortable. It requires facing parts of yourself you have ignored for years. But as Gurdjieff said, “One must die to the old self to be born again.”
How to Begin the Walk Toward Yourself
This is not a destination, but a path. And this path begins not by taking a huge leap, but by stopping for a moment.
- Observe Your Machine: Watch your reactions. Why did you get angry at that comment? Why do you fear the future? Don’t judge, just watch.
- Question Your Scripts: Are your thoughts truly yours, or are they recordings playing in your head from your childhood?
- Embrace Silence: In a noisy world, the voice of the soul whispers. You need silence to hear it.
Welcome. The longest journey of your life begins now. As you walk this road, what do you hope to see in the mirror that will appear before you? Will the real “you” frighten you, or will it finally set you free?
