Humanity’s inner journey is an ancient river flowing eternally from darkness to light, from multiplicity (kesret) to unity (vahdet). The Eastern science of Ishraq and the Western Hermetic alchemy traditions whisper the same secret: A seeker who cannot liberate their mind cannot set foot in the sacred temple of their heart.
By nature, mind is a master of illusion—endlessly creating narratives and shuttling between the dark shadows of the past and the towers of anxiety about the future. In this untamed state, mind generates doubt, suspicion, whispers of the ego, and baseless assumptions, locking the soul in a prison of its own illusions. But where is the exit from this prison? The answer lies hidden in the alchemical transformation stages through which consciousness passes via the archetypes.
The Stage of Archetypes: The Mind’s Shadows
As we navigate the stormy seas of mind, we must recognize the ancient actors within us:
- The Trickster Archetype (The Trickster / Satanic Whisper): The force that whispers baseless fictions, fears, and poisoned assumptions to the mind. It shows what is not as if it were, and makes the future seem like catastrophe. It cuts the human from their inner truth and makes them a prisoner of external events.
- The Judge and The Victim (The Judge & The Victim): When a person loses center and loses their inner observer, they oscillate between these two poles. To hide their inner deficiency, they become either a harsh Judge who cuts down those around them, or a helpless Victim who surrenders to fate.
The First Stage: The ‘Witness’ Archetype and the Secret of Bending Time
The first step in purifying thought is not to fight these actors in the theater of mind, but to step down from the stage and become a ‘Witness’ (Observer). This stage is the gateway out of the alchemical nigredo—the darkening of mind and the collapse of illusions.
The Observer’s Silence and the Bending of Time:
- Remaining in the Field Yet Not Lost: The soul that attains Witness consciousness does not get pulled into events and dissolve. It remains in that still and unmoved point in the center of the storm.
- The Mystery of Bent Time: The Witness focuses with complete dedication on the work at hand in that moment. When the work is complete, they gracefully and consciously withdraw from the field. They do not lock their mind to past or future; it expands. Not clinging to action or thought lifts time’s pressure from the soul and opens the secret of ‘bending time’—stretching time by moving into the contemplative dimension.
- Contemplation (Deep Reflection): The mind withdrawn from the field yields its place to the Heart’s Ishraq (illumination) wisdom. Mind is no longer a storm but a clear lake reflecting the sky as it is.
The Second Stage: The ‘Guardian’ Archetype and the Protection of the Heart’s Gate
When the Witness stage is complete, the seeker steps onto the second and most critical level: The Passage to Guardianship (The Guardian Archetype).
Being a Witness is passive observation; being a Guardian is awakened will. The Guardian is a sword-bearing holy sentinel standing at the gate of mind. They decide which thoughts are permitted to enter the heart, and which doubts or suspicions are turned back at the gate.
The true home of knowledge, intellect, and wisdom is the Heart (Suwaida). The mind purified through Witnessing can no longer permit the seeds of whispers and doubts to be sown. The Guardian protects the heart’s sacred temple from baseless assumptions and mental parasites—and on this subject, we explored a similar transformation process in our article on spiritual alchemy, acceptance, and order in human relationships.
The Recipe for Inner Alchemy
To achieve purification in thought, follow these steps:
- Separation (Separatio): When an anxious thought arises, whisper to yourself: “I am not this thought; I am the Witness observing this thought.”
- Centering (Centering): Stop following thoughts and fabricating stories. Return to your center by focusing on your breath.
- Sealing (Guardianship): The moment you perceive doubt trying to seep into your mind, awaken the Guardian archetype: “This is an illusion and I close the doors of my heart to this baseless assumption.”
When purification in thought becomes real, the noise of mind stills and the heart reunites with its eternal peace.
