From Illusion to Reality: The Human Quest for Freedom in the Light of Spiritual Teachings

Throughout history, philosophers and mystics have sought to answer one core question: “How can a human being truly be free?” While philosophers offer keys like learning (Plato), thinking (Aristotle), or action (Sartre), spiritual teachings—Esotericism, Neo-Spiritualism, and the Fourth Way—present a provocative premise: A prisoner cannot plan an escape unless they first realize they are in prison and seek Spiritual Freedom. The essence of this realization is Spiritual Freedom.

In spiritual teachings, freedom is not a given right; it is a state of consciousness that must be earned.

Spiritual Freedom is a journey that requires self-awareness and dedication.

Only through this journey can one attain true Spiritual Freedom.

The Core Delusion: The Human Is Not Yet “Human”

Philosophers often assume that humans possess a conscious “will.” However, the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff and P.D. Ouspensky reject this, stating that man, in his current state, is a machine. Man does not “do”; things simply “happen” to him through automatic reactions.

The first step toward freedom is not learning external information, but realizing one’s own mechanicalness. As Gurdjieff said: “A man cannot escape from prison if he does not realize he is in prison.”

False Personality vs. Essence

Spiritual sources distinguish between the “Essence” and the “Personality” (or False Personality). Personality is a mask shaped by the fear of “what others think.” Most people say “I” while referring to this false mask. (Also read: Conscience And Freedom)

Edgar Cayce and Silver Birch emphasize that true freedom begins with the soul’s mastery over matter. Silver Birch states, “The spirit is the master; matter is the servant.” Freedom is not “being yourself” in the egoic sense, but sacrificing the false self to reach the True Self (Essence).

Freedom of Choice and the Paradox of Fate

In Neo-Spiritualism, founded by Dr. Bedri Ruhselman and systematized by Ergün Arıkdal, freedom of choice is proportional to one’s evolutionary level. Ergun Arıkdal explains that while we have a “Plan of Fate” created by past choices (Karma), a human can transition from the “Law of Accident” (being a leaf in the wind) to the “Law of Fate” (living according to the soul’s plan) through conscious effort.

True freedom is not “doing whatever one wants” but a voluntary participation in the cosmic “Duty of Service.” Dr. Bedri Ruhselman calls this the “Intuition of Duty”—fulfilling the requirements of the divine order not out of necessity, but through high consciousness.

Conscience: The Wisdom of Al-Farabi and Averroes

Islamic philosophers like Averroes and Al-Farabi pointed toward the “heart” and “conscience.” Spiritual teachings elevate this view but distinguish between “Acquired Conscience” (social morality) and “Embedded Conscience” (the divine voice within).

Silver Birch defines conscience as the “Divine Monitor” within every human. Freedom begins when the noise of the self is silenced, and this quiet, internal monitor is heard.

Conclusion: Spiritual Freedom is a State of “Being”

Spiritual freedom is:

  1. Awakening: The effort to exit the “sleep” of mechanical existence.
  2. Non-Identification: Stopping the identification with roles, possessions, and suffering.
  3. Service: Realizing that the greatest freedom is becoming a servant of the Divine Will (The Whole).

In conclusion, a spiritually free person is not one who does what they desire, but one who can say “no” to their mechanical impulses and consciously construct their life as a part of a divine plan.

This conscious construction involves aligning one’s actions with a higher purpose, recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings. Through this alignment, individuals cultivate a deeper understanding of their role in the universe. As they refine their intuition and listen to their inner guidance, they experience a profound sense of peace and fulfillment. Ultimately, spiritual freedom transcends mere existence, transforming life into a meaningful journey of growth and self-discovery. This journey is marked by a commitment to act in harmony with the divine order, fostering a true sense of liberation.
