According to esoteric teachings and the Gurdjieff system, the word “Human” does not define a single type of being. Humanity is studied under 7 Categories of Man based on their levels of development.

Recognizing which of the 7 Categories of Man you belong to is the first step.

The first three categories (Man No. 1, 2, and 3) constitute “Mechanical Humanity”—they are essentially “machines.” Man No. 4 is the “Balanced Man.” Men No. 5, 6, and 7 represent “Conscious Humanity.”

Mechanical Humanity: Living in a Single Room

Humans are born as Man No. 1, 2, or 3. Their common trait is being “single-centered.” They own a magnificent three-story palace (body and mind) but spend their lives only in the kitchen, the living room, or the library.

• Man No. 1 (Physical Man): The center of gravity is in the Moving and Instinctive Centers. They perceive the world through physical sensations. Religion and art for them are purely ritualistic and formal.
• Man No. 2 (Emotional Man): The center of gravity is in the Emotional Center. They decide based on “likes” or “dislikes.” Their knowledge is limited to what they love; their religion is based on fervor and fanaticism.
• Man No. 3 (Intellectual Man): The center of gravity is in the Intellectual Center. They approach everything through theories and logic. They are “bookworms” who may count the letters in a holy book but miss its spiritual essence.

The Tower of Babel: Why Can’t We Understand Each Other?

The myth of the Tower of Babel is not just a dusty legend; it is our modern tragedy. We use the same words, but we speak different languages because our “centers” are different.

This reflection on the 7 Categories of Man leads to deeper insight.

The Physical Man shouts, “Stop the philosophy, let’s lift this stone!” The Emotional Man says, “You don’t feel the soul of this stone.” The Intellectual Man interrupts, “Wait, we must discuss the static calculations first.” Because everyone looks through their own narrow window, the construction of truth never finishes. This is the “circle of mechanical humanity.”

The Wrong Functioning of Centers: Internal Chaos

A major problem of the mechanical human is centers interfering with each other’s work:

1. Mind instead of Emotion: Trying to analyze a situation that requires empathy. The “Intellectual Center” offers statistics to a grieving spouse instead of a hug.
2. Emotion instead of Mind: Panic or anger taking the wheel during a crisis that requires calm analysis.
3. Mind instead of Movement: Thinking about which foot to move while descending stairs, which causes stumbling. The Moving Center is 30,000 times faster than the mind; when the slow mind interferes, the system locks up.

The Way Out: Man No. 4 (Balanced Man)

One is not born as Man No. 4; one becomes it through a school or teaching.

• Permanent Center of Gravity: Unlike others, Man No. 4 has a stable orientation based on the idea of “self-knowledge.”
• The Bridge: They are the bridge between mechanical and conscious humanity.

The Summit: Conscious Humanity

• Man No. 5 (Unity): Has reached the “Indivisible I.” The Higher Emotional Center is active.
• Man No. 6 (Objective Consciousness): The Higher Intellectual Center is active. Sees the world objectively.
• Man No. 7 (The Complete Man): The final point of human evolution. They possess an immortal “I” and eternal will.

Conclusion: On Which Floor Do You Live?

As Gurdjieff said: “To do, one must first be.” The mechanical human cannot “do”; things simply “happen” to them. Only the awakened human (No. 4 and above) can be the master of their destiny.

Look at your life: Are you trapped in emotional fluctuations (No. 2) or lost in theories (No. 3)? Or are you learning to navigate these rooms to become the Master of the House?
